At XR Marin's AR Student Academy Fall 2019, students are discovering the magic of Augmented Reality (AR). In a whimsical group project, each student created pixel art that was combined as individual pages in a small book called Illusions. Illusions showcased each student's pixel art creation, along with a short narrative. The real magic of the project resided in the augmented reality enhancements that each student programmed. Like waving a magic wand, a simple scan with a screen device such as a cell phone or a tablet via an app transformed the simple graphic art into a wonderful animation! In their very first project students got to see how the physical world can be enhanced digitally through AR.

"The artwork was created in pixel art style for affability and aesthetics," said Solomon Smith, XR Instructor, XR Marin. Students used 32x32 pixel canvases with a 15 color limit. Art was created using the GIMP image editor and then brought into the Unity game engine to finalize animations and create interactive elements. Students used Vuforia an augmented reality toolkit to enable the printed images to be recognized and tracked.

Illusions presents our students’ first steps toward learning the foundational skills of AR to move them forward in their mastery of AR skills and XR wizardry at XR Marin.
